Every year around this time we get the same call. The rain has started, the car porch has gone green, and someone in the house has already slipped once on the way to the car.
If your porch or driveway is starting to green up, the window to deal with it is now — before the heavy monsoon rain sets in and the surface never really dries out.
Why Ipoh Porches Go Green So Fast
Algae and moss need three things: moisture, shade and a surface to hold onto. Perak gives them all three for most of the year.
Humidity here keeps outdoor surfaces damp long after the rain stops. Car porches are usually roofed or shaded by the house, so direct sun never burns the growth off. And textured surfaces — interlocking pavers, brushed cement, unglazed tile — hold enough water in their pores and joints for spores to settle and spread.
That’s why the greenest part of your driveway is almost always the strip closest to the wall or under the tree, and why the middle of an open driveway stays comparatively clear.
It’s a Safety Problem, Not a Looks Problem
Most people book because the porch looks bad. The reason we push it as a seasonal job is different.
Wet algae is genuinely slippery. It sits as a thin film on a hard surface, and it gets worse once rain adds water on top. Older family members carrying shopping in from the car are exactly the people most at risk, and a wet tiled porch gives no warning before your foot goes.
There’s a second, slower problem. Moss holds moisture against the surface it grows on. On interlocking pavers it works into the joints and loosens the sand. On rendered perimeter walls it keeps the render permanently damp, which shortens its life.
A rough rule for Ipoh homes
If you can see green on more than a quarter of the porch, or the surface feels slick underfoot when wet, it’s past the point where a broom and a hose will fix it.
Why Scrubbing Doesn’t Work Anymore
By the time algae is visible as a solid green film, it has grown into the texture of the surface. A brush takes the top layer off, the surface looks better for about two weeks, and then it comes straight back from what’s left in the pores.
Pressure washing works because it flushes the growth out of the texture instead of shaving it flat. Our jets run around 120 to 150 bar, dialled to the surface, and on open driveways we use a rotary surface cleaner so the finish is even rather than striped.
After washing, shaded areas get an algae biocide treatment. That’s the part that changes how long the result lasts — it kills what’s left in the pores so the regrowth clock starts from zero instead of from halfway.

Exterior work is quoted after a free on-site estimate, because surface type and how much build-up there is change the hours more than floor area does.
Plenty of people add windows to the same visit. If the crew is already on site with water and access equipment, doing the glass at the same time costs less than booking it separately later.
Book Before the Heavy Rain, Not During It
The practical reason to do this now rather than in December: a washed surface that gets a few dry hours afterwards holds the treatment better, and you get the safe porch for the whole wet season rather than the tail end of it.
Most Ipoh homes do this every 6 to 12 months. Shaded, damp properties — the ones with mature trees or a north-facing porch — usually land at the shorter end of that range.
What You Can Do Between Washes
A wash plus treatment resets the clock. A few habits stretch how long it stays reset, and none of them take more than a few minutes.
Trim back what’s blocking the light. Overhanging branches and tall shrubs keep a porch permanently shaded. Cutting them back is the single most effective prevention available, and it’s free.
Keep the drains and outlets clear. Water that pools stays put, and standing water on a textured surface is where growth starts.
Move the permanent objects. Mats, planters and that bag of potting soil that’s been in the corner since last year all hold a damp patch underneath. Shift them occasionally and the damp patch doesn’t become a colony.
Hose the shaded strip now and then. Not a scrub, just a rinse. Knocking growth back while it’s still a faint film is much easier than dealing with an established one.
Watch the gutter. A slow leak above a wall produces the vertical green streaking that people assume is just dirt. Fixing the leak solves the staining permanently.
